An amazing £2.85bn is left for charities

We left £2.85billion to charity last year — thanks to people writing their Wills and leaving a Legacy to Charity.

Rob Cope, director of the Remember A Charity consortium, said: ‘It’s incredibly encouraging to see the collective amount gifted to charities in wills rise, as it genuinely has a huge impact. For example, legacies fund six in ten lifeboat launches and two in three guide dogs. However, there’s still a job to be done before gifting in wills becomes the norm.’

The huge amount was announced by Smee & Ford, who monitor Legacies to Charity, and highlights Remember A Charity in Your Will Week which sees 200 charities coming together to launch the world’s first charity-powered search engine,

McClure Solicitors have years of experience – 165 years to be precise - of helping their clients in writing their Will. We also promote leaving a Gift In Will for great causes – in 2017 our clients pledged just short of £31 million to charity.

The Top 10 Charities our clients choose for Gifts in Wills were:

Alzheimer’s Society

British Heart Foundation

Cancer Research UK

Cats Protection

Dogs Trust

Macmillan Cancer Support

Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI)

Salvation Army

Stroke Association

But our clients have also left a Gift in Will to over 900 charities including local Hospices, well known National charities and local not so well known charities. All great causes.

Andrew Robertson, Managing Director of McClure Solicitors said “If you are thinking of leaving a Gift in Will to a charity you will join many of our clients who have already done so – in fact many of them leave to more than one charity. At McClure we will explain to you what a Gift in Will is, let you decide how much or little you want to leave as a legacy to your favourite charity, and let you know you can change your mind at any time should you want to change the details. And we don’t charge to change. If you use our Free Will for Charity scheme we don’t even charge you for writing the Will – we just ask you to consider leaving a donation for charity.”

So once you have looked after your family, why not consider a Gift in Will for some great causes. Remember you won’t pay, as the legacy will be deducted from your estate after you die.
